I definetely don't think so. My baby is having trouble moving around the cage when his nails get too long. He gets depressed. Also one night he got stuck on very top of the cage and could not get down till I helped him in the morning. He was hungry and could see and smell his food that was only couple inches away from him. I think THAT was cruel. Since then his nails get trimmed every week. Pebbles
