But I have figured out a solution. Our parents stay on the mainland in a camper than has an extra room and electricity, so since we stay on the island only at night and come in at least 8 or 10 hours a day, they agreed to house him and keep him warm. That way I can still spend all day with him. I hadn't wanted to put that burden on them before, and was hoping to find another way, but they offered. Thanks for you input!
