Mika behaved the way you describe when I first got her. I would leave the cage door open, turn off the lights, and lay down like I was asleep. With me "asleep", she then would come out to explore. Eventually, she'd jump from the cage to me on the bed and run away really quickly. When I wouldn't do anything, she'd sneak over to me, nip my arm a little to test if I was asleep...then quickly run around in circles on my back and run away again. When I peaked out the corner of my eye, she'd be behind the desk looking to see if the "giant" was going to chase her.

It was through things like this and a lot of patience that she became a good pet.

You also might want to try a parked, but not running car at night. Most gliders I've heard of love it. Just be really careful transfering them to and from the car (use something zippered if possible) and don't let him get in the dashboard.
