well as far as the falls go......mine seem to be made of rubber.....i have seem them jump at a smooth wall, from 3 ft to 5 ft high..and fall.....it didn't seem to bother them too much.....scared the crap outta me though.....my recommendation is if you notice them about to jump (you can usually tell by their tail being raised right before they jump ) and if you do end up missing them on their fall.....observe them closely.....look for sing of them favoring anything (leg, arm, back, etc)

as far as picking them up during the day....i know mine wake up fully whenever i open their nestbox. so i don't try it.......only on trips to the vet......i let the vet do the nail trims......they can sedate them, and it is less tramatic on them and your hands......also i have heard of using a wodent wheel with sandpaper in it for a couple days to file the nails down....

hope this gives you some ideas......if you can get them to the point where they let you handle them however you want (gently) you could probably trim the nails yourself.
