Treatment of diarrhea:

1. Decrease activities. Avoid stressful atmosphere.
2. Avoid dehydration by taking clear liquids often -
water, kool-aid, jello-water, gatorade, broth, popsicles,
pedialyte, or ricelyte. Due to the loss of body salt as
well as liquids, the electrolytes must be replenshed as
well. For serious diarrhea, pedialyte or ricelyte is
used. Pedialyte or Ricelyte- brand name for a mixture of
water, salts, and carbohydrates made for treating small
children. Use a mixture of ½ water and ½ pedialyte. An
opened bottle of pedialyte will lose it’s vitamin and
mineral content after 3 days..
3. A feed normally, but avoid high fat foods or those
with a high sugar content. Also avoid citrus fruits.
Additional quantities of more fiberous foods may make the
stools more firm-(potatoes, crackers, toast, cereal-baby
cereal oatmeal, cooked vegetables, soft fruits, poached or
boiled eggs) Do not sacrifice calorie content.
4. Check anal area and make sure animal can keep it
clean. If not, a damp washcloth may be used.

Contact your local veterinarian if:
1. No improvement in 24 hrs.
2. Animal has seizures or convulsions.
3. Animal has trouble breathing.
4. Blood is found in bowel movement.
5. Signs of dehydrations - dry mouth, dry & sunken eyes,
little or no urine.
