I haven't had my gliders for a real long time, but I do have two breeding pairs. I have watched them both mate quite a few times. Yes the do get vicious and bite down on the females neck to restrain her. It is normal that they do fight. But it seems to be the concensus that if the fighting gets too bad and they draw blood, to seperate them. I am sorry you had to go through this. I am curious as to why they never had any joeys? Were they a wild caught pair? And what is there diet? Did they ever have any joeys start but not survive? Sorry I couldn't be more help.... JO : I started out with my first sugarglider 5 years ago. : I raised her alone for one year before I got a male to : be her companion. I was never able to find anyone who : knew anything about gliders until I found this page on : the net. I was excited that I now would have a place : to take to people that would understand and relate. : After reading some of the entries on here I am a little : reluctant to talk to anyone. Everyone seems to be so : opionated and rude. I will admit that I do not breed : gliders and that I do not have any degrees, but I do : know everything that there is to know about my pet. : I will always have more questions. I feel that : this is a sign of a good "parent", to admit that you : may not know everything and that your own views may not : not be the absolute. To tell another owner that they are : doing something wrong or incorrect would be one thing, : but to tell them that they don't deserve to own a glider : based on something they said or believed seems harsh and : childish. I say harsh because my glider always manages : to put a smile on my face. They are so sweet and loving : that there is no one who does not deserve one. That is : just as bad as saying someone does not deserve to breath. : Does that sound right??
: My original question is to do with breeding. To narrow : it down, problems with breeding. My couple never had : joeys, but they tried. The problem appeared a couple of : months ago. My female developed a wound on her back. : I got an oinment from my vet, who is an exotic and does : know about gliders. When I went to place the oinment on : her back I noticed that there were two wounds and that : they were actually joined with a piece of fur between. : By this time it was infected under the flap of fur. : She was not moving very well and her body felt cool to : touch. I immediately put her on a warm terry cloth and : took her to the vet. He gave me an antibiotic and I have : nursed her back to health so far. My male I sold because : they could not stay in the same cage any longer without : him hurting her more and I could not put him in his own : cage. : My question for whoever is this, have you ever seen a : male hold onto the female during mating so hard that : he actually separates the layer of fur from the body? : This is what happened. Why?
