I was given a suggestion to take an old milk container or jar put the leftover fruit in it with a piece of saran wrap over the top with hole poked in it just big enough for them to get into. It worked! They can't find their way out either. I just took the flies outside and discarded them and the fruit and was rid of them.

: We have a horrible fruit fly problem. The flies particularly hang around Gizmo's bowl(the bowl is cleaned out every morning, fruit does not sit for longer than over night). Do any of you have a similar problem? If Gizmo catches and eats one of the flies, would it hurt him? HOW DO WE GET RID OF THEM? This is bloody annoying!
