Ear Problems (mites?) posted by Brian on June 07, 1999 at 03:54:38: For those of you who want to know what the problem was... Apparently my gliders contracted a digestive tract parasite. The parasite has small eggs that made their way into the circulatory system, and once there, they traveled to the gliders ears. The capillaries in the ears were too small to let the eggs pass, so blood flow stopped. The ears then started to die from lack of blood flow. The good news is that the vat treated the gliders with an antibiotic and the gliders show no signs (other than the permanent loss of parts of their ears). The odd news: my gliders have a clean cage and no contact with other animals. Where the parasites came from is a mystery. Keep an eye out for things like this, though. If there ears look like they are under attack, get them to a vet real quick- otherwise they will lose their ears entirely. Luckily mine were treated before it was too late. Hope this helps...
