Subject: Thanks to everyone who posted or emailed... Posted by Elwin Bullard on June 15, 1999 at 15:29:24: Here is what the vet and I think happened. Janet was obese when she first came in. After three months on a proper diet she had just started to slim down some. Then she got pregnant and was nursing. This caused her body to give up vital nutrients. When she could not get around easily she quit eating. This caused the baby to pull even more nutrients from her body. When she could not stand it any longer she ate the baby to get back some nutrients. This was too little too late. We tried force feedings for three days but she did not seem to want any of it. Janet was almost a pocket pet the first year her previous owner had her. Then they got her a male and spent less time with her. Finally she ended up here. We were told she was nursing when we got her but never found any joeys ourselves. Despite all attempts to be friendly she was always standoffish and cranky. I think she died of loneliness, malnutrition and the stresses of nursing. We are waiting on a necropsy and I will post the results when I get them.
