Do you have a wodent wheel? If so you can cut a peice of sand paper to line it. It will cause their nails to file down. You can always get the kind with adhesive.

It works great for me. I just line part of it. I only take it out when it gets yucky...which is often..

: Well, I can't help you with the prevention part, but if you do cut to far, a little flour ought to stop the bleeding.
