Well, I have some galvanized cages and some painted. I started 6 years ago with all galvanized and painted all of the ones I'm currently using when I did my spring cleaning. I hadn't actually noticed any chewing on the wire, but painted wire is much easier to clean with a pressure washer and stays cleaner longer. I just used rust-o-leum paint that is safe for children's toys and furniture.

I also use plastic nest boxes, though they have smooth edges not rough. My nest boxes are cleaned regularly and sanitized with bleach before going back into use.

Of course, all of my gliders are in pairs or family groups.
I don't have any single male gliders, and I haven't seen self-mutilation (Thank God!!).

It may very well have something to do with galvanized wire irritating already sensitive tissue. Kind of like little kids will scratch mosquito bites until the bleed and not even realize they are hurting themselves and making it worse.
