First, have you thought about whether you want them to breed? Lucy will be old enough to get pregnant next month (7 months). If you decide to let them breed, think carefully about how many you want. If you don't want another litter after the first one, be sure to get alex neutered while the first litter is still in the pouch. You might want to get a few more toys and alternate toys so that they don't get bored. You can get tons of cool stuff at home depot, like ropes and pipes. Also, I think gliders are usually more active at around 4 am. Mine eat when they get up and then take naps. If boredom is the reason for Alex's despondency, you could get a bigger cage, or better yet, completely glider-proof the room so he can roam free at night and return to the nest box in the morning. New territory and greater freedom always seems to perk up animals. This plan would work best in a scantily furnished room that you've inspected for dangers or escape routes from top to bottom. If you can do this, I highly recommend it. Mine have been free roam (in 1 room) for a year now without any problems, and my vet who specializes in gliders said they're the healthiest and most robust he's ever seen. They're also friendlier and more confident even though I don't spend as much time with them as I used to.
