That happened to my Jerry one time. I have never seen it again and I thought it was broke, cuz when I tried straightening it out it went right back to the loop. He was playing when it happened and wasnt bothered by it so I left him and it's been fine since then. I have no clue what that was about but I've always wondered. Good question! Maybe has something to do with age? Maturity?
