Well ... I've been down this wooden road several times. It's my personal opinion that wooden shelves, wooden nesting boxes and any other items made out of this type of untreated wood is a smelly mess waiting to happen. I have taken all wood out of my cages with the exception of apple branches that I cut from our one apple tree for them to climb on. For some reason those branches don't have a problem with holding the urine smell. You're right, they sure can get really strong. I use washable cloth items for
them to sleep in and plastic items for them to play on that can be easily washed. My gliders are especially partial to the ferret hammocks (not with a fleece lining though). I guess they get the feel of hanging in a tree. Hope this has been helpful. I guess if you're going to have a glider/gliders you have to just get used to some of the smell that goes with them. Let me know how you do.
