I understand completely. I have MANY pets both at home and at school. When babies have been born people are excited to get the cute little one and eventhough I try to make sure they really know what is involved and give them as much printed material as possible, I still have "taken back" several animals. You're right. People should really think about what they are getting into before they take the cute little babies home.
