Joeys have a tendancy to "stick" to mom until they are too large to fall through 1/2 inch wire. Actually, 1/2 inch is smaller than you think. I personally have never had one fall out of the cage once it leaves mom and starts wandering around on its own. I use LARGE bird cages but not the ones for parrots and larger birds and have never had a problem.
