Gliders self mutilate when they have an injury and its hurting them, or itching from healing. Neutering is one concern for mutilation. Not all gliders tho, mine chewed himself so he had a special collar made from x-ray film and some tape on the edge so it didnt cut his neck. It worked fine and thats how his self mutilation was fixed. Some will chew themselves if they have something irritating them like maybe a small cut, or a broken tail. As for how common, it seems like its happening much more lately.
