It has been my experience with joeys that they "stick" very close to mom. I have not had any joeys "fall" through the wire, but that is not to say it couldn't happen. Once they are old enough to explore on their own, they are too big to fall through the spacing on the wires.
I have even had rejected joey that was NOT pushed out of the cage, just pushed to the side of nesting box.
