We have two males and have used the closet for over a year with no problems. I clean the closet weekly, most of the things within are washable. I use bleach water every 6 mos or so on the walls and air it out for a few days before putting them back in. Because they sleep all day and are up with us in the evening, I don't think they care about it being dark in the closet. They are very healthy and the 9'x 4'x4' dimensions seem preferable to a smaller cage.

: Couple of things. I personally don't like the idea of keeping the SG in a Large Closet. It simulates darkness 24 hrs. a day; the ventilation is not good and I don't consider it a "safe" environment. You did not mention the sex of your SGs. If one is a male, the it won't be too long before the odor of scent marking will overwhelm the closet and the room. There is not way to CLEAN the closet adequately. Living quarters for SG MUST be kept very clean in order to insure their good health.
: As for newspaper, I do use it, however, the ink used by my distributor is vegatable based ink.
: As for the plastic on the bottom of the closet, SG are very into chewing or tearing up anything they can. My concern is they will chew through the plastic. This will not only cause ingestion problems, but also a hazard with their getting under the plastic and not being able to free themselves.
