It all really depends on the individual personalities. It generally isn't wrong to get a male and a female, although if they are brother/sister, or you aren't planning on breeding, you should get the male neutered. I don't know when it is best to do this. Really, bonding just takes lots of time and patience. Bourbon has a great page on bonding, although I don't remember the URL at the moment.
