My gliders are the exception, mine do like me to hold them. I've always done it so I guess they are just used to it. If they are hyper they don't like it, but usually I can just scoop them up and carry them around, they don't really hang out on my shoulder. They don't really struggle to get out of my hands unless they see a better place. As for cuddling, in regards to the original post, gliders are all for it. They need to be taught this, but willingly accept the invitation to be close to their owners and suck up your heat. Gliders really interact with their owners and crave physical attention unlike a lot of other little animals, like gerbils or guinea pigs.
