Flanel is probably okay, but I would prefer something with a little more "body" to it. Like something quilted. You could use the flanel to line the pouch. As for air holes, they will get plenty of air from the opening in the top.

If you don't want to make your pouch, mine prefer the ferret hammock with a handkerchief or bandana in it. I just hang mine from the top of the cage. They love it. I keep several hammocks so I can change them for clean ones frequently.
