Kyle,
Thanks for explaining. My heart goes out to this little fellow that you are getting - It sounds like he may have found a champion in you.
Let me give you some advice (if I may?)
I bought a pair of gliders from a guy who was in a similar situation to the one that you mentioned. The pair were 2 1/2 yrs old when I bought them. They had no names and other than knowing the guy bought them at an auction - we know nothing of their history. They were never handled that I know of. It took a week before they would both accept treats from me. I have had them a year now. They know their names. They are not mean. The male will come out and sit ontop of their cage, but not on my hand. The female prefers to not come out at all. They are now sweet, semi-trusting gliders. Bourbon and her husband came to visit me last month. The male glider, Henry, took a liking to Bourbon's husband immediately (as did her husband). He stepped right out onto his hand. He has never done that with me. What I am rambling about here is two things 1) a good, caring owner is better than the alternative 2) all gliders have their own personalities. This is the second glider of mine that took an instant liking to a new person. The other one now lives with his "instant friend".
This little guy that you are getting may be your instant friend. It can happen. Or he may need you to love him and teach him how wonderful people can be. He may fall in love with a friend of yours. Darn Kyle! I forgot where I was going with this!!!
I guess just open your heart to him. Imagine him as a tiny little creature that has suffered horribly at the hands of others (even if it's not true, he may feel like it is). Do not force him to do things - encourage him and let him calm down. I bet he will be an awesome glider in time with you standing by him, protecting him.
Best of luck!
Betsycc
Ps. I would still hold off on getting a female
