Is he biting it, or over grooming it? Maybe another glider is biting him? If he is overgrooming thats a good sign of possible stress. If he is chewing on it it could be stress or possible an irritation...like a broken tail..or a parasite. Gliders do not deal with stress very well. If you think that he is chewing on the tail take him to a vet. As long as the tail bothers him he will keep messing with it. He could seriously hurt himself. If he is keept with another glider you may want to check and see if they are fighting. Another glider may bite him to show dominance...or even while fighting over food or sleeping space.
