Yes, I have had some black ones in mine before too. And they were definitely still in the worm stage and still alive and wriggling. I didn't try to feed them because they didn't look very good. How good can a mealworm look? LOL
I also by my worms and crickets at a bait store. They are fresh and reasonable.
