The ear is a very complex organ/sense. The "ears" help filter debris as well as muffle sound so to speak. Without his "ear" he may be experiencing louder sounds than he normally would. He may also be experiencing some pain in the inner ear. Go ahead and have the vet check him out.
You will probably want to be more alert to dirt in the ear or any changes you can see at all inside the ear.
Speak very,very softly to him and keep the other noise levels down as much as possible until he gets accustomed to his situation.
Let me know what the vet says.
