I agree with you wholeheartedly. It is great to have information on medical problems, but you should always consult a veterinarian before starting any treatment. I worked in a vet's office and saw many people come in with a self diagnosed problem, only to find out that it was something else.
But, also, if you do suspect a problem, please see your vet and let him/her know what you suspect the problem might be (symptoms, change in appetite/activity level, etc). You are one of the vet's best sources of info on your pet.

This is just my two cents worth.
