I definitely know the smell you are talking about. I always have an extra clean pouch/hammock - mine prefer the ferret hammock with a bandana in it - so I can replace the dirty one immediately. I change it when they first wake up and are more interested in eating than in what I am doing to their bed.
I just throw the dirty bed in the washer with the other laundry - I don't put it in the dryer however and I don't really have a reason why not. I just let them air dry before putting back into the cage.
