Onions, especially raw onions, have been shown to trigger hemolytic anemia in dogs. I have heard of this happening to cats and horses. Onions are harmful to people as well if eaten in large enough quantites. Because sugar gliders are so small it is not hard for them to eat enough onion to hurt them. I don't know about garlic, I think it might have been thrown in with onions.
