The thing is that they will eat carrion in the wild, they are opportunistic eaters and if nothing else is available they will eat the carrion. We know that they live longer in captivity and we know that food left at room temperature will grow bacteria so why risk it? I think that common sense would tell us to remove any possible food that may be harmful to them instead of leaving it there and taking unnecessary chances.
