I don't know about shampooing but it doesn't seem like you should shampoo them.(just my thought) because they should learn to keep themselves clean all by themselves. I also had this problem with Noe, she's 4 months old and about a month ago she was filthy.She would have melon and cat food stuck on every inch of her body and she smelled really yucky! I told the breeder about it and she said not to bath her because it was still cold outside and she would get sick.So I let her be and loved her the way she was and believe it or not she's a grooming freak now.lol. She never stops grooming herself.Just give your little guy time and I think he'll learn to groom himself.I just think he might be at that age where he's still got more to learn.
