Galvanized metal isnt necessarily bad, but over time, their urine and cleaning agents tend to make the metal get nasty, which in turn stains your gliders fur (and smells funny); The breeder I got mine from had hers in Galvanized metal cages and was in the process of changing them out for vinyl coated one for this reason.
You should be able to by vinyl coated mesh for your cage at places like HomeDepot or Lowes. Some of the other cage builders on this site can give you really good places (and ideas) for your project.
