Mealworms do become dormant when cold. We buy them 10,000 at
a time and keep them in granulated high protein game bird
food and store them in an old refrigerator that we have just
for glider foods. When it comes time to feed them to the
gliders, I cut up cold red delicious apples (minus the seeds)
and scoop the worms out with a large slotted spoon and dump
the worms onto the cut up apple pieces. The worms don't have
a chance to warm up and crawl or move much before they are
devoured. I won't touch the yukky things either.
It's really funny to see our gliders if they have apples
without worms. They pick up apple pieces and throw them all
over looking for their treats.
