I want to let everyone know what my vet told me. This vet office caters exclusively to exotics, and they seemed to know their stuff re: gliders. (Oh do I feel blessed after reading some of your posts re: vets!) Anyway, he explained to me that for my live crickets, the gel type water you can get for them doesn't do our gliders any good. The crickets apparently love it and devour it, filling their gut. This gel is made of a plastic polymer type material with no nutritional value. He suggested using wet paper towel changed daily for their hydration, and feeding mustard or collard greens. (Hey - I live in Louisiana - no problem finding that stuff here! Let the crickets feed on this for 24 hours to load their gut before feeding the gliders for best nutritional benefit. This is not intended to replace any other nutrition you are already feeding. It just makes sense to me that if you have a choice between a gut full of plastic vs a gut full of good nutrients, why not choose the latter? P.S. I know the major nutritional value of the crickets is protein from their muscles, etc, but they eat the gut too... I'd be interested in any discussion about how those who keep crickets do so and what you think about the above.

I forgot to mention that he said this was true despite the fact that the packages dry cricket food and the gel water were both calcium fortified. The repcal in the leadbeaters, as Bourbon and others have pointed out, is enough calcium. Okay, I'm done.

I just 'bumped' the topic "Grasshoppers". (after digging for it for almost an hour...hehe...)

Thank you so much! "Grasshoppers" was very informative. I will give them carrots and oranges too. Believe it or not I didn't even know sugar gliders existed when "grasshoppers" was originally posted!

This is why I say that crickets from the Pet Stores are empty. The crickets are not fed and all they get is water and sometimes it is from the jell. "Gut Load", can be fed 24 hours before the crickets are feed or frozen. And can be found in most Pet Stores that sell reptiles. It can also be ordered on line. www.sugarglider.net and then click on Exotic Central.
