Maggie seems to be coming along just fine.. she eats well, hasn't been crabby or finicky. She's entergetic and affectionate...
...until she climbs onto your hand. Man, woman, young, old.. as soon as she comes into contact with a human hand she relieves herself all over you. If you wake her up to handle her, she pees on you. If you give her plenty of time to go, she'll go on her own but saves some just to pee on you. This seems to be her primary sign of affection and tool for binding.

She pees in my pocket, on my shoulder, in my hair, on my hand, anywhere she can. Her little pink
pee nub extends and rubs along your skin to stimulate her to pee on you.
I've heard of other pets who can't be handled for very long as they'll eventually have to pee, but Maggie absolutely and without a doubt does it on purpose and as soon as possible.

Also, and perhaps more alarmingly, she pees in her bed almost daily. Her bed is a ceramic birdhouse with a wide mouth, screwed into the top of her cage. Her bedding is a clean white cotton handkerchief, which we replace and wash regularly.

Maggie is about a year old, a little less out of the pouch.. if anyone can offer some input, I'd greatly appreciate it

Thanks,
Wes

Although she has been OK so far, Maggie has also never had her nails trimmed. There's not much for her to snag on, but I'd like to cut down on our scratches. She doesn't cooperate. She won't be held around the middle.. she'll dig her rear feet against your hand until she can climb out of your grasp. She pulls her little fists away before we can clip even a single nail, let alone 20 of them. She is too quickly excited when woken up to ambush her when she sleeps. We won't squeeze her or force her as we're afraid of hurting her or cutting off too much of her claws, so she can easily squirm away.. any advice?

Thanks again
Wes

I realize that the peeing can be frustrating to say the least. While glider owners have to expect some peeing/pooping on them, it seems Maggie is really on overdrive. Have you by any chance had her checked to determine if she could possibly have a mild infection? We know that gliders will mark their territory ... which includes their humans ... but I have not come across one who marks with this intensity. It might well be worth a vet check.
As far as the nails are concerned, my gliders will not settle down long enough for a trimming just like your Maggie. You might want to try putting a small piece of VERY FINE sandpaper under her food dish which will help wear down the nails when she eats ... running on and off the sandpaper. Just be sure to monitor this to make sure the pads on her feet do not get irritated.
Hope this helps.

I appreciate your responses..
Considering she has never even had a checkup, I think I'll schedule a vet appointment for her. It can't hurt.

I'm pretty confident Maggie is a female. I've seen her pouch and there is no trace of either a head or a chest scent gland. She is, as I said, about a year old now so I'd imagine those things would be noticable by now.

Thank you for the advice.

P.S. What if she pees on the sandpaper. =)

Wes, you're not alone. Even if I leave my two gliders in the cage for about an hour before I let them out, they both still almost always pee on me. I believe they do save some just for me. And both sexes do it because I have one of each. Oh, by the way to whoever mentioned it before, both sexes have the pink pee nobs as I believe they were called. Ya gotta love it when those things get rubbed down your arm drizzling pee all the way to your hand:)

That's EXACTLY the problem!
I used to stimulate her to pee with the warm wet Q-Tip, but she outgrew that. I try to give her a grape on a bunch of paper towels but she's taken to grabbing the grape and running with it, usually behind her cage or on top of my CD player (gasp!)

I can't tell if she's crafty or downright stupid. =)

I'm not handling her for more than a few minutes per day.. I leave a shirt or something over her cage sometimes to make her feel near me but I worry about her not getting enough attention. She is without companionship but I don't think I could handle another glider.

I don't know if this info will help or not but as I was growing up, we had a cat that was diabetic and he always peed all over whether it was in his bedding, where he was sitting, or even just standing. He drank a lot of water too. We couldn't understand it until we took him to the vets and found this out. Eventually we left him outside in a the shed with some very nice bedding that we'd change everyday and wash. He ended up dying at a young age of kidney failure. I don't know what that had to do with the diabeties but it effected them somehow. I would be worried that there was something wrong with Maggie. My Arrow (sugarglider) had peed a lot in the beginning, on my hand, hair or where ever but as he got older it got better and I could get him to do most of it in his cage after awhile by the time he was two years old before I took him out. If you don't play with Maggie at least one hour a day, she will get depressed though! If you really care for animals, you won't give up on her. Take her to the vets and see what's really going on.
