Hi. Since yesterday, Pipa (one of my two gliders) has been doing a new sound sequence (when she sees me?). It starts with a short bark (only one), followed right away by three "shhuuii" kinds of sounds and then a lot of fast clicking... Does anyone know what it means (it is so consistant it seems to mean something)? She started this when I was close to her, and did it many times afterwards. She did it again when I checked on them in the middle of the night. Thanks. Anne

I think that maybe Pipa is trying to talk to you in glider language. I don't know what it exactly means (zoology hasn't advanced that far and I doubt it ever will) but certain sounds mean different thingss (happy/sad/angry/scared) and the gestures may be revielling. Like, if she is standing on 2 feet with paws in the air, STAY AWAY. Hope this helps

This is a definite happy sound. As Sugar Fan stated she is just saying how glad she is to see you. It is definitely a form of flattery.
She is also telling you that she wouldn't mind playing some more if you happen to have the time wink

Does the "shhuuii" sound sound kinda like the noise they make for mom? When my gliders were babies they did this all time and now that they are older, the one of the two does pretty much what you described, one bark followed by several of these "baby noises" when he wants me and either can't find me or is in the cage and can't get to me. The same things applies to his twin brother. Between him and his brother, he was always the worse cryer when he was a baby.
Basically, he's a whiner smile But I love him, so what can I say? I just baby him and come running when he starts crying like that.

His whining comes in handy sometimes. Just last night he started doing it after I had put him in his cage and gotten into bed, and shortly thereafter I heard the telltale sounds of his brother frolicking about the room smile I had forgotten he was still out!

I know exactly the sound your glider is making. One of my females does it for about one night a month. I'm pretty sure she's in heat when she does it. Try clicking or hiss-barking back to her. Mine gets really excited when I do it and "talks" to me back. She's very vocal on those nights and is quite hyper, happy and healthy. To tell you the truth though, she gets a little annoying because she makes so much noise and is so excited--She keeps me up all night!

The reason your sugarglider is doing that sound is because he or she wants you to play with him or her or he or she doesn't want you to go. For example, Shadow starts making those noises and griping at me when I leave for school.

Thanks for all your replies.
The theory about Pipa doing this sound when in heat would explain why she has now stopped doing this sound alltogether... I'll have to see if she starts doing it one day a month or so...

Anyway, I really appreciated all the feedback.
Thanks.

it all depends...is your other glider the same gender,is the other a male, is she in heat, she may be warnibg you to stay away, all of the above are possible reasons she may be making this strange noise. wink

Anne-my sugar glider was making the sound all night last night and I tried taping it for you with my digital camera, but of course she wouldn't do it on cue. Every time I tried to tape her, she just tried chewing on the camera! This morning I tried again by hissing to her and getting her to "talk" back to me, and she just looked at me like "oh mom, I'm over that."
