How many of y'all have the stomach to feed pinkies? Are they so much better than crickets? I have this hideous mental image of this sweet, cute, adorable glider ecstatically crunching through blood and flesh and bone like a little ravenous killer!

Ummm... if that's your image... then I certainly wouldnt suggest you watch them eat it if you give them pinks - 'cause that's exactly what they do... Definately not a pretty sight, but if you do decide to try it - the frozen/thawed is the way to go. They dont make as much of a mess and they dont squeek and squeel either... which is absolutely horrible. Also another benefit to pre-killed, freezing for 30+ days will kill possible bacteria & parasites.

We were feeding Pinkies to my glidder Stinker. we tried it once with a store bought pinky. then we started breeding our own mice so we could feed the pinky babys. but we kind of established a rule that once the pinkys start getting hair, we won't feed them. but this coused a probblem because we ended up keeping so many of the babys. cause the glidders will eat only one per night and mice can have up to like 14 babys at a time. And the babys start growing hair after like a week and a half. then the babes we kept would grow up and they ended up imbreeding which I think is wrong. well long story short I got sick of hearing the babys scream. and not to gross you out but they would be tortured. cus sometimes the glidders will eat the legs off and the babes don't die right away from that. so I would make Stefan feed them when I'm not in the room. but we have since decided that the pinks were too messy and I felt to bad for them. so then we were stuck with a grip of pinkbabes. so Stefan ended up feeding them to our Fish we have Huge Oscars and Pacus. And our Fish eat them whole, there is no mess, and they usually eat them right away, before they even sink. I don't like to watch that either, but one time they didn't eat one and it sank to the bottom...So I felt so bad for it so I reached in and pulled it out. It wasen't breathing so I blew on its face and rubbed it's chest. And it started breathing again. So I went and told Stefan. And we decided that I feel too bad for the poor things so we shoulden't feed them anymore. now our delema is that we have SO many mice and they constantly have babys. So the point of the story is If you think you'll feel bad about it don't do it they don't need to eat mice to stay health. And if anyone wants to rescue mice from my house I will give them to ya no cost. I want them to have good homes.....we can't keep all of them and we don't want to feed the babys any more. so let me know if you want a pet mouse!

It's not that I don't have the stomach for it I just feel with the leadbeaters and crickets there isn't a whole lot of extra's needed. These are just my feeling on the matter. I also don't see that these things are THAT healthy. Who knows where the store got it? I myself would rather not get them started on blood. Another thing that has crossed my mind is salmonella is in other raw meat what keeps it from being in this? I would like to remind everyone I am not a cow or chicken farmer. I do not know. LOL

Personally, I dont have a problem feeding live or frozen rat/mice pinkies. My Cher loves them and if I feed live she kills them real quick, then just starts eating. From now on the only live pinkies Im gonna be feeding are rat pinkies that come from the clinic- I know those are safe. Pet store bought mice I will be freezing. If you cant stand to see a body be torn up and eaten like the animals do on the Discovery channel then dont feed them. Feeding live you can also hear screams and such so for the weak-stomached who are gathering guts to feed pinkies- start off frozen. Best advice I can give ya

Personally- I wouldnt!! Thats just me, when we have shrimp I do share that. I dont like giving my gliders anything I wouldnt eat.. I've tasted leadbeaters, briskys(accu-feed, corn powder, apple powder, and dried apple), marsupial milk(nasty!), and Im working up the GUTS(no pun intended) to try a cricket and mealworm. I think the mice and rat pinkies are the only thing I wont ever end up trying.

I as kim, also share shrimp with Baybe it must be her absolute fav, but only in moderation, as I am really not sure of the nutrional content. However I also have tried everything that my Baybe has eaten. the mealies dipped in chocolate had to be one of my all time favs... The leadbeaters wasn't exactly the tastiest, however; now that I have started adding a bit of babyjuice in the mix, it really isn't so bad any more. HEY SHELL !! wanna try another BIG OLE" spoonful?? lol

Thats not all that funny! I was just a naive little newbie... Everyone (okay you) said they had tried it! Besides, my hair has never been shinier! hehehe

I like the leadbeaters. You all must not make it right or something because it has always been a lil sweet. I could do without the sandy eggshells but other then that it’s fine in my book. lol Also, is there an opinion on the salmonella factor? I will never feed the darn things I would just like to know. Even pet store frozen pinkies may be carrying something? Really, who knows where these things come from? Another thought was parasite, worms, or any other thing that can be carried; can it be passed too? I am really curious about this?

When I feed pinkies they come from a research lab from a friend. These mice are cleaner than the meat being sold in the store. They also are frozen for extra safety. Big yuk factor. One cage they were only eating the innards so I decided to hand over the skin and bones to our eat it all cage. One of them grabbed it and proceeded to munch down on the remainders. Not a drop was left, he he.

Is there any reason why I feel obligated to go eat some rep-cal, glideraid, vitamin drops, and those lil fruit and veggie things I got that look like cat food. are you guys serious....you really tried all that stuff. and MEALIES! NO WAY! I won't even touch them let alone eat them!

Well Im really attached to my gliders and if I can help it I dont want them eating anything I wont. I've tasted almost everything they have eaten except crickets, mealies and mice/rats. Im telling ya I WILL try a cricket and mealie sometime. Maybe if I get drunk? LOL

Eva, I don't think Kim is saying that to be a good glider owner you MUST taste this stuff. I'm with you, except I did taste the leadbeater mix. It wasn't awful, just really chalky. No, sampling this stuff is not a prerequisite of being a good glider owner... padded room? Maybe! LOL!

just a thought about the salmanela thing, the process that raw meat goes through before it goes to the store I think that is where the salmanela comes in to the picture, think of how long that cow has been dead before it becomes your dinner? Since the pinky mice are still alive when the gliders tear into it, I don't think that there is time for salmanela to be there. Just a thought, I'm no health specialist. I by the way, do not feed and would not feed my gliders pinky mice, I have had pet mice, and anything that I would have as a "pet" I can not feed to my gliders, As for tasting the food, I have tryed all the fruits and veggies! lol. I have tryed the leadbeaters, and as for the crickets, and mealworms, I'm sure that it "tastes like chicken" lol, so no need for ME to try it

I used to have 3 pet mice. My first was an African Dwarf mouse. He was sweet! Then I had 2 regular mice, a BEW and a Brown one. They were cool, but stinky and I still have no probs feeding mice or rats to my gliders even tho both make pretty cool pets.
