i got a new sugar glider sunday, as some of you may know, i was a very proud mommy. it died thursday. i came home from work and her little head was poking out of her pouch and she was stiff. she was 10 weeks oop. i need to make sure that i did nothing wrong. i fed her happy glider food, fresh fruit and and veggies, and a little leadbeaters with gliderade. my other glider loves this. i kept her in a room that was 65 degrees, i had noticed that she wasnt eating much the couple of days i had her, but i thought that was because of her small size and that she was in a new place. is there anything i did wrong? how can i make sure that my new female wont die? i know that there are probably not a lot of answers for that, and yes, i have carolines book, and i did my research. she was to be a friend for my male. im just heartbroken about this.

i forgot to say that i kept her in a room with a couple of snakes and a iguana, they are all in good health. i kept her on the other side of the room, they took no notice of eachother. i have a small house, and this is the best i could do, my cats own the rest of the house. i kept her on pine shavings, the breeder did this too, i am going to buy aspen from now on for my other glider, i read the other postings about it. i had her in a colder room, and i took her out of the cage and she seemed sluggish, so i warmed her up and she seemed ok, so i didnt take her to the vet. i then moved her cage to the warmer area.

Hmmm well there are many things that it could be...but really the only way you will ever know is with a necropsy.

Are you sure she was 10 weeks oop? And was the breeder sure she was eating on her own? What diet was she on before you got her?

Diet: Happy glider food is very new on the market, and is still in the testing stages. In reality your gliders are test gliders on this food. We do not yet know what problems may come from this diet because it is still so new. There are many proven diets out there that have been proven to be healthy for gliders and have been around for a while now.

Please pick a proven diet that is completly balanced for your glider.

Here is a list: http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/diet/index.html

As you probably know a good diet many of us use here is Bourbons diet:

Thats weird I wasnt done! It just cut me off! I guess I will repost the rest here

Temp: Gliders have been known to die in temps just barely below 65 degrees. Keeping her in a room that cold is risky because the temp only has to drop a little for her health to suffer. Was this room drafty at all or could she have gotten wet? You say you had her in a colder room....colder than 65 degrees? That can be very dangerous for them. Did she ever feel cold to the touch? Did you hear coughing or sneezing? Did you see any nasal discharge? Were her eyes ever cloudy?

Have you taken the other glider to the vet? Anytime a glider dies you should have your other gliders checked. Also when buying a new glider have them checked immedietly..its possible you were sold a sick glider and didn't know it.

Iguanas:
Iguanas carry all kinds of diseases. Pregnant women are not even suposed to be around them because of the risks. Gliders are very prone to getting these disease. Iguanas can appear very ehalthy, because they are not effected...its others that become affected. Very small anumals like sugar gliders can die from these diseases in a very short period of time. They should never be housed in the same room...some diseases are air born....its also possible that you handled the iguana then handled the glider without washing your hands. No matter how healthy the iguanna is it should not be housed in the same room as a glider. It is very risky.

Pine shavings:
Pine causes respiratory problems in all small animals..and they can die from this. It is unlikely she caught a respiratory infection that fast...but it is possible. Did you hear any coughing? Was she having any trouble breathing?

As I said it can be so many things...and a necropsy is the only way to tell. However the fact that she wasn't eating much is probably a big factor. Also the fact that she was cold to your touch and you had to warm her up is a big possibility. Gliders can not survive in very cold wearher..and their bodies will start to shut down if they get too cold. So it is possible she had some dammage from the low temps.

I am sorry for your loss and I hope this helps you some. Please get your other glider checked out soon to make sure he is okay.

I am terribly sorry for your loss, Emily...It would be my guess that it was too cold for your new glider...Being so tiny they chill very easily. This time of year I keep polar fleece blankies in the cages which they always use to cover up!

With the temp. at 65 Sugar Gliders will go into hypothermia and die. Especially babies. They are already stressed from going to a new home and with added stress of being cold is disaterious.

You might want to consider a small space heater in a small room where you could at least keep the temp. at 72 degrees.

Do not mix the Bourbon's Leadbeaters with Gliderade.

What is heat tape? Gliders do not need something where they have any direct ehat..like heat rocks..reptile rocks.....keeping the room above 70 degrees is what they need.

thanks all. i did not mean that i mixed the leadbeaters with the gliderade, only that i put it in the cage at the same time. i did feed them bourbon's diet, and the old breeder fed my little one the dry glider food, so i was slowly changing it to the leadbeaters. i gave my male the dry food only a couple of pieces a week, for a change of texture, to liven things up a bit. i dont mean to sound defensive of anything, thanks everyone, you all helped me out a lot. i am getting another glider from the lady, and i WILL reemember to keep her cage warmer.

Emily, okay for starts what I am going to post will be for future reference..
1. Beck Happy glider food,I am not exactly sure what that is yet? is that the one by pet pro?
2. DO NOT mix my diet plan with any other, as the happy glider food is another plan, as is the glider aid, a suppliment.IF it is NOT on my new BML page, it isn't something I endorese to go with my diet plan.
the rotating of diets and mixing diets, leaves the door wide open for possible problems, as on my page i will say this again. Choose 1 diet PLAN stay with it, contact the person's name associated with it and follow it to the T. Do NOT modify or change without consulting with someone about it. We all have tried very hard to make the diet issues less confusing, and still have to tell people not to combine plans.
Cynthia an advocate of brisky's, me an advocate of the BML, would never condone the use of BOTH plans even as a rotating thing, as on a day by day basis, they don't always eat the same things.
3. Heat. turn the temps up a bit. The heat tape is NOT for gliders nor is the Reptile heat rocks. If the temps can't be regulated by thermostat or other means for the room temp, please reconsider getting something other than another glider.
4. shavings???? their cage bottom should be at least 2 inches above the bedding (shavings), they should NOT have direct access to it. If your cage does not accomadate for this, make a bottom for it. it should be a wire bottom that they can NOT reach through, and be able to grab contaminated food or old bits of food, from the shavings, even if you use aspen.
