on the odor thing , I use hot water with baking soda in it to clean my cage & let me tell you it realy cut's the smell . try it once a week . and as for the cat litter & news papper I dont think thats a very good idea , they say that the dust in the cat litter will give them breathing problmes & new papper is toxic .

Well, yes and no. The thing that is toxic about newspaper isn't so much the newspaper, but the ink. If you have plain newspaper (some people talk about plain paper as the same thing as plain newspaper) then that should be right. On the kitty litter, you are absolutly correct

Re: newspaper ink being toxic...at this time, most if not all newspapers are using soy based ink which is not toxic.

Re: ink -- colored inks are not always soy-based, so stay clear of them, but black and white is OK to use.
