i dont think you should. You are too young, not to be mean. Have you researched sugar gliders ALOT? do you have money to pay for them & unexpected expenses (there can be ALOT) & can you drive in case the need to be rushed to the vet if your parents arent home or wont take you? Can you stay up late at night to play with them? They are nocturnal. im 14 & know im not ready for one yet with all the research ive done.

I just got my first sugar glider a few days ago and I'm fourteen. They are not too expensive once you obtain them, but are very expensive to obtain. You can't feed them off a small allowance and you should keep at least 30-40 dollars around for unexpected charges. But before you even think of getting one do ALOT of research.

You need to get and read Caoline MacPherson's book SUGAR GLIDERS (publisher: Barron's) before deciding. Sugar gliders live 12-15 years in captivity....what will you do when you go to college??? Did you know that sugar gliders have been documented to die of loneliness?? (This means that when you on vacation, you cannot just leave it for someone to feed for if you do, you may come home to a dead glider....This has actually happened to people.) Are you easily bored? It really isn't fair to the glider if in a few months or years you are bored and don't want to care for it. Are you prepared o fix food for in daily, keep it's cage clean, and spend at LEAST an hour a day with it? These are all things you need to carefully consider...Please feel free to email me if you wish. I don't mean to discourage you but I want you to be prepared before you go out and get an animal....I can't live without mine....they are worth everything to me.

Hi again...Do the males always need neutered and if so then why? If its such a hassle to own a male, should I just buy a female?

They don't always have to be neutered...most people do this ebcause they have a stringer smell and tend to make things a lot. Some males have become calmer and less agressive afterwards. As for buying a female well it can soemtimes be harder to buy one...most people want a female because of the scent marking issue...so ti can be harder to find one.

To cupcake; If your mom isn't totally convinced then you shouldn't get one. I know that's rough to hear, but what would happen if your glider got sick, would your mom pay for it? If your under 18 then I definitley think you need your parents to be behind you a 100 percent in case any costly emergencies happen that you can't afford.

Hey Cupcake,

This is Brandon and I'm responding to your question on convincing your mom. I'm 14 and I got a female about week ago and she has already bonded with me. I don't know how good your persuasive skills are, but I've got some tips for you. First of all do lots of research and be ready to answer any questions she has. Secondly, emphasize the fact that they have almost no smell and make extremely good pets. Make sure you're persistent, but don't let it sound like whining 'cause that will just P them off. This is what I did and it only took me four days to convince her. Also make sure that you show her how cute and soft they
are. I got pictures off of www.sugarglider.net to show her. I guarantee she'll melt like butter. Good luck!

PS- What part of the country are you in?

Brandon Boyd

E-mail me with the results.

I suggest you learn about sugar gliders in two books by Caroline MacPherson; they are published by Barron's and readily available at any major bookstore. Goo luck! You really need to spend some time doing research before you go out and get a glider. They are a huge responsibility - especially for one who is not prepared. Gliders can live 12-15 years. They have been documented to die of loneliness. (This means that you do not go away and leave them with just someone to feed them OR you could come home to a dead glider.)

Bridget,

I am 12 years old, and my Mom has two sugar gliders which I help out with. I am responsible and care for a lot of pets, but I can definitely say that I would noot be able to care for these pets by myself. I have neither the money or the energy to take these gliders on full-time. If you really want gliders and are responsible, maybe a parent could "co-own" your gliders with you (after you have done the necessary research and know what you are dealing with). Remember, in captiviy, gliders can live a pretty long time, so be ready for a long-term commitment. Sorry to be negative, they are GREAT pets, but just know the facts before you jump in.
