My glider Tiki is about to have a joey, you can see the little bulge, and i was wondering how soon was too soon to handle them after they are o.o.p? I know that some animals the more you handle them when they are young the better and others it's not good for them, so please give me your opinions. Thanks.

I prefer to guage handling a new joey by mom. In other words, alot depends on how bonded you are to the mom ... I think.
First time moms can be nervous and the possibility of rejection is higher when you handle the joey of a mom who is not bonded with you or tends to be nervous.
I prefer to pet the joey while it is with mom the first few days to see how she reacts to my touching and scent on the baby.
If she seems comfortable with this, then I try to hold the joey for very short periods of time at first, giving mom a little break. If I see that she is looking for her joey, then back to mom it goes. As time passes, she will tolerate your having the baby for longer periods of time.

I read that you can really start to handle them once their eyes are opened, and if the parents are overprotective, then try to do it during the day when they are sleeping if you want this little sugar glider to be a tame adult.

Hey--
Yeah well I bought this breeder pair in December, they are three years old. They are very, very shy and very skittish. So I am hoping to keep this next joey whether it be male or female because I have a seperate cage that's already set up, because I just weaned a joey and sold it so that's no problem but I want this joey to be extremely tame and bonded with me because, well I love Tiki and Kahlua to death but Kahlua's teeth hurt and so do Tiki's claws, lol. Thank you and please keep the information coming also, I have a question...Tiki has had 3 sets of Joeys already since I think March is what the people said, is this over doing it?

I agree completely with what KarenE says. I always determine when I'll handle joeys by mom's reaction. Most of my moms are very bonded to me and very calm, so it has never been a problem handling joeys from day 1 OOP. I am, however, very sensitive to new moms as I do not want to give them any reason to reject a joey. Good luck!
