this isn't about gliders but I needed to talk to some people who love animals as much as I do. I came home today and found my boyfriend scrubbing the floor. My family's eldest dog, Tika, had made a mess. I called the vet and they told me to take her temperture which I have never done for a dog before. I did and it was 105.6. I called the vet tech back and was told to get her there immiediately. So my mother and I got into the van with her. I honestly thought that this vet visit, when we left, it would be without tika. So the vet gave her fluids and something to bring the temp down. He gave her some antibiotics and told us to take her home, with some special food, antibiotics and something to help her with her diariah. So we get to the car and pull out of the parking space and mom asks me what I have done to my leg. there was blood all over the thigh of my jeans. Mom immediately parked the van and we took her back inside. Her anal sack had broken and it needed to be cleaned out. So the vet put stuff on it and sent us on our way again with knowing that the ER vet was open and could help if need be. She has till five PM tommorrow to see if she is any better. It not then sht will be put to sleep. Honestly if this is how each episode is gonna be then I hate to do that to her just cause we like her company. It can't be pleasant. I told my mother that when we put her to sleep that I would go in with her. It will be hard but I want her to know that we are not abandoning her. that we still love her very much. Please pray for Tika, that she find peace in one way or another. thanks, Marie Anne Tika, Cookie, Pixie, Percy, Willow, Fawn and Slate

Marie Anne, i wish the best of luck to your family and Tika. I work at an animal hospital and have seen cases like this and there are miraces in these cases. I have a golden ret. and one came in and his family was told that if he didn't eat by the morning they would have to put him to sleep. I felt not only sorry for the dog but for the kids in the family. I kept telling the dog to pull together for the kids. That night driving home i cried, i couldn't help thinking whait if that was my dog and about the kids in the family. Well the next day i came back he got to go home! I have only been working there for a couple monthes but i have seen a few cases like this. I hope Tika pulls together for you and your family, if not we all know she will be in a better place and will be pain free and happy. My prayers are with you.

Marie Anne: Tika is more than a pet, she is a friend. As the owner of Sadie, a formally abused terrier mix, I have learned that love is quite powerful. If you can, take a day off from work and constantly give love and attention to Tika. Find out if her anal gland can be removed. If you find out that her bowel evacuates spontaneously due to age, ask if the problem can be treated by medication. Check in the phone book for a canine homeopath, if tradition medicine doesn't have a helpful answer. Tika is not gone yet. She still has your love and with it, a will to live. Only Tika, God and You know when it's time to let go. Love, Samuel G.

Animals have a remarkable ability to sense and know just how much you love them. Trust me, this converts to an amazing desire to live. If it is at all possible for the animal to survive, it will with this great desire to live. My heart goes out to you, and I know in my heart that if there is any chance for Tika to pull thru he will. My ChaCha had a serious infection, and the very good, very experienced vet said that they cannot cure bunnies of this kind of infection. ChaCha loved me with every ounce of his little Netherland being, and he lived three wonderful years longer than he should have. (He was not a young bunny when he got sick.) I got him a companion, Sweet Pea, who dearly loved him too. She groomed him when he could not groom himself. That old bunny chased her around like a teenager, and I was afraid he'd have heart failure. (He did not, just baby bunnies. LOL) Truly, ChaCha's last years were happy ones and when he died, it was suddenly and without suffering or symptoms, for which I was grateful. I wish the best for you and Tika. Keep us posted.

We went to a different vet today. I also got to talk to the one that moved away that mainly did Tika's care. She told me that her anemia could cause this. There are ways to help that. Tika can't eat hard things. We found out from the vet today that her teeth are absesed. We had no clue, just knew they needed to be cleaned soon. But what is soon exactly....? We also found out she has a bladder infection which the clavamox should control. He did a blood test and the results will be in tommorrow. She is not running a temp now so things are better. I hope that she can stay here, but if she is in pain it is better for her to be put to sleep so she can have peace. I have to know though, I can't knowingly put a animal to sleep that might have something that can be controled with simple medication or procedures. She is old though, so I know her day will come. I also pray for a miracle. She has been with us since I was eight. It seems as though she has always been around...if you know what I mean. Thanks for the well wishes Marie Anne and Tika

Sounds like your dog is sick and HAS been sick for a while. These things do not happen over night. If your dog's anal sac ruptured your dog has a long recovery ahead...it won't heal by 5pm the next day and will probably require surgery. I work for a vet and have seen it happen. What is it you are wanting to know? DOgs need yearly teeth cleaning just like people do. All your dog's problems sound fixable, if not expensive. Absessed teeth need to be cleaned and/or pulled, anal sack needs to be repaired, bladder infection should be cleared up with antibiotics. It sounds like you have doubts about putting your dog to sleep. Call your vet and ask his/her opinion about your dog's situation. If you have questions you should ask your vet. If you want support then this is the place to be.

I know Marie in the real world and I have known her for over a year now...in this past year I know she has taken that dog to the vet many many times. The dog is older and has been having health problems. They have even told her in the past that the dog may not get better. I don't think this post was saying the dog just got sick and she needs help. I think she is havign a very hard time dealing with the fact that they may have to put her to sleep. Marie is going through a hard time and was just looking for some sympathy. Not all posts are asking a question...sometimes people just want someone to listen.

We went ahead and put Tika to sleep tonight. Her blood work came back and her first liver enzyme was high, she had a low white count and platlet count. And above all her hematicrit level was twelve. This past summer it was 20. And I was told 10 is deadly for sure. She was a very sick and old dog. We did what we thought was best for her. I loved her dearly but we were told that when a dog has anemia that they will never recover. I just hope she is happy now and in peace. Thanks for all the help. Marie

Oh Marie, I'm so sorry. I never know what to say when stuff like this happens. Just know that we're all animal lovers here, and we all (most I'm sure) know what you're going through. I am sorry for your loss, and like one of my kids favorite movies says... All dogs go to Heaven! Prayers being sent to you and your Tika. Shell

Marie, I am so sorry for your loss. I know that dealing with her passing is difficult enough, and even more so when it must be your choice. When my Kojack (a loving and beautiful Norwegian Elkhound) died, I grieved as much as I did for my grandparent's passing. The following quote is something I found back then, and I'm sure you'll appreciate it. My best wishes and thoughts are with you, dear. "I have sometimes thought of the final cause of dogs having such short lives, and I am quite satisfied it is in compassion to the human race; for if we suffer so much in losing a dog after an acquaintance or ten or twelve years, what would it be if they were to live double that time?" -Sir Walter Scott
