We have a young male, and had hime two weeks before we ran into two little females that needed a home.....We gave them a home, and would like to breed them eventually.....Can we breed the females with the male and then return them to their own cage to have the babies, or should we keep the male with one and the other alone....What scenario would work better....Would the male even breed them if they were not in the same cage all the time....With our hamsters we keep the male seperate from the female all the time, and then for breeding put the female in his cage over night and then return her in the morning...This usually works well and

In most cases a breeding truo will not work out. In your case often times a female will eat the other females babies. This is not always the case, but does happen a lot of time. The father plays a very importinat role in child raising. The father baby sits while the mama takes a break. The father is the one who teaches the children how and what to eat. The mama needs the father...it can be hard work and stressful without him. You would be best off putting just ine female in with the male and not seperating them. However if the two females are bonded to each toehr you may be better off just getting a different female to put in with the male.

I agree with Mary. Trio breeding can be too risky to the joeys and too stressful for the female/s. I attempted trio breeding before I knew any better and it was not a success. Although, the joey survived, it was evident the situation was stressful for all three.
It would be my recommendation that if you intend to keep the three together, then by all means have the male neutered. Joeys are cute and so much fun to handle and watch grow, but as you will see from this board and many others, there are entirely too many unwanted gliders out there looking for homes. If you intend to sell the joey/joeys, you may find it is not as easy as you would think.
Just some food for thought smile

I have heard bad things about trio breeding also. A lady that use to come to my job - we started talking one day & she told me that she had gliders also & that she bread in trio's , but every time she had baby's that the mom & dad would eat them , this happend 4 or 5 times . a few mounths past & my girl had babys & they made it just fine , she finaly figerd that it was trio breeding , I figer it was stress or fear of the outher gliders hurting the babys ,or overdominants. because I know that my male is more over domminants than the female.

It really depends on the gliders themselves. There is really no wrong or right answer to the question. Some say yes, some say no. Some people breed in pairs, some in trios, and some in a colony situation. All are known to work, it just depends on the glider. In my case the females were killing each other's Joey's. A lady I know breeding a colony. With my pair I have had more Joey's from four gliders then she has with 6 all together. (No need to worry their cage is not a cage but a huge walk in Avery) Anyway, I also have and know many friends that have had, and some that still do, success with trios and colonies. It really just depends on the situation, age, glider, space, when they were introduced, and the diet etc. These are just my thoughts. I have had better luck with pairs but the choice is yours weather or not you want to try it. Then it is up to the gliders. Good Luck! Hope I helped. smile

I am really confused what to do, I really would like to breed our gliders, not just for the expierience for the kids, but I also breed hamsters and other small animals, and I DO NOT consider any of them BREEDER stock, but our pets....We are not into this realy big time....meaning the breeding thing..... I think that I am going to try the trio breeding....THis will be the first breeding for both females...I do not want to breed and breed and breed....I want to breed maybe three litters each female, and then have Gibby fixed and keeep a baby budy for them......We will see...I know I will not have a hard time finding homes for the babies, because in my area there are NONE.....I seem to be the only one around for MILES, and not joking......It takes awhile for it too catch one, I have been to at least 10 pet stores and they ask "What is that"......:) wink smile frown ;)

How old is your male and how old are the females? It can be dangerous for them to get pregnant too young. Many older males will rape the females even if they are not sexually mature. Please make sure they are old enough for this. Please also remember that if the babies are eaten it will be stressful on every glide rin the cage. If it doesn't work out the first time I hope you will not keep trying. It can cause great stress especially on the female. many females will show depresseion when their baby dies.

frown Hello Mary
Thank you for the input.....I have read ALOT and it seems the general consenses is NOT to breed trios. So I am off looking for another male and I will try to split up the girls, and I don't think it will be that hard for them, they, all three, one male and two females seem to like each other.. Not fighting or any sounds....Just snuggle...Our male is about 9 months and the females are over a year....I don't know if we can do 4 Gliders as far as giving them enough attention, although so far so good, they are all SUPER friendly and loving and one even snuggles, and the one female gives kisses...My two very young children also work with them....Yes, 4 and 6 year olds and they are doing REALLY well...Keep in mind my kids have been exposed to all sorts and kinds of animals since birth....I guess we will look for another male....Any you know of....We need a friendly male though and preferable younger.....How will two males react during play time, will they fight????Thanks again
Jim ;)

Jim I am glad that you have read a lot...so you do know there are many concernes with trio breeding....it might would have been okat for you...we can neevr know how each glider willr eact. We can say in general trio breeding won't work out...but thats not all the time.

As far as playtime a lot of males will fight if they are both unnuetered. But they can get along. Most will get along until one or both hit sexual maturity. After that they normally become rather territorial an dagressive towards of males. Good luck to you in finding a male...and everything else you plan on doing. Sounds like you have great kids.
