my oldest male (I had my two gliders 1 month) keeps biting me. This morning I had the younger glider out and was holding him by the cage. I left the door open in case the other one wanted out-he looked like he was asleep though. Anyway the older one got out and came over to the edge of the cage and jumped to me. He walked around on me and then came up to my shoulder and bit me. Why? It is not liked I bothered him, he came to me. My youngest never bites me (only nips), does he hate me or something? By the way it is also not like I just took a shower and maybe my lotion or something was to perfumey for him. I would appreciate any responses- I am tired of him biting me, I will NEVER give up on him though!
thanks,
Jill ;)

Biting usually means that the gliders is scared or doesn't trust you yet. You need to make sure and tell him no and maybe blow on him when he does bite, do that to your little one too, so they learn that biting, not even nipping is acceptable.

You are probably right in your case, it may be a combination of some things, trust? yes maybe, but i think it goes deeper than that, you are talking about 2 males , obviously one older than the other, the second i assume is 6 months or older? so here you have their sexual dominance kicking in, the old man showing he is the boss, and hating the smell of yet another glider on you...
2. you may have a smell problem, the lotion may very well be a problem, good luck let me know what you have done and tried to eliminate this problem, also check out the bonding page at

Since sugar gliders Like to sink their teeth into trees to get sap out, maybe your glider just sees you as it's favorite tree, and it's natural instinct is to try to draw sap. Enjoy. smile

Your glider may be biting you also because he is the older one so he may be trying to protect the younger one. You should just try to pay attention to the older one so he can get to know you more so that way he might trust you more.

I am trying very hard to pay attention to him. I take him out and feed him meal worms by himself so he feels special like he has my undivided attention. I just want to do whatever I need to to help him. He does not seem to afraid if he will come and eat out of my hand.

smile smile He might just be hungry. My glider when i take him out at night nips like crazzy. Feed him a meal worm or pinkee or grape and heel calm down.
Also males are terretorial, Mine marked a computer chair with its scent galnd and now heel chew your finger to shreds if you try and wash it. Other wise he is always sweet. My suggestion is to kinda repeat the bonding process with the pocket traning and put away when he bites and that stuff wink wink wink wink wink wink wink wink ;)

They do go through a biting phase. When they become "teenagers" (around 10-14 months for males; slightly earlier for females) they establish social structure by biting to show dominance, much like puppies in a litter that play together and sometimes the play gets rough. The glider is trying to establish his/her dominance over you. Ignore it or reprimand. Do not scream and above all NEVER hurt it no matter how mad you are. You are bigger, forcing a glider to accept you or your rule is taking away the gliders right to be a glider and is cruel. It is fine to establish rules to protect or ensure the safety of both parties. Gliders are just an animal that you cannot be too forceful with otherwise you endanger thier safety. Take Care and Glider love to all!

When he does bite me I just ignore it and usually continue on with what I am doing. When he goes to bite my finger I will blow LIGHTLY on him and he quits now. Things are much better and he is adapting better than ever ;)
