hello all,
I just got my little guy, and he doesn't really look like any other glider i have seen. He is 7-8wks oop, he is so fat, and fussy i understand about the fussyesn, but the weight they said he was born that way. He has a double chin and cheeks like a hamster his eyes are the smallest i have ever seen on a glider they aren't big and poping out like the pic on the front of the web site or like my other glider when i got her.
My question could a glider just be born fat? So far he doesn't eat very much but that is only cause i just got him and he is getting use to everything. He is the cutes like gilder i have seen, he can climb and do other things like glider; even better he is starting to jump and china my other glider didn't start jumping for a month after i got her and i got her at the same age also.
Thanks for all replys
Sissy

Sissy,
A 7-8 week oop joey who has been raised with mom should not be "FAT".
How much do you know about the person you got him from? Is there any possibility whatsoever this little guy is nowhere near the age you think he is. Like your first glider, my joeys raised here with mom were definitely not fat eventhough they were eating solid food and weren't doing much jumping either.
I'm afraid I'm rather suspicious of his age and also his DIET. Did they tell you what he has been eating? That might go a long way explaining the weight gain. If his diet does not seem to be the problem and you are comfortable he is the age you said, then I would definitely get him to a vet before he has some major medical problems.
Please let us know what you either already know or find out.

Karen..I read somewhere that if the mom gets too many fatty foods then it goes to the baby. I think ti was on a post about yogurt. It said that the fat had to go soemwhere so a nursing moms fat could go to the baby.

I can't imagine the baby actually being born fat though. I don't see how it would get out...the moms pouch only stretches so far. I don't know. This isn't making much sense to me.

I almost have to agree you were maybe lied to about the gliders age.

Do you know what diet he was on...and what diet was the mom fed while she was nursing?

Karen,

I got my china from her, and i know that she is a very good breeder, been breeding gliders for over 7 years. She has been feeding him soild foods just right before i got him i guess a few days maybe i don't really know, other than that he was eatting from his mother.
I was thinking about taking him to a vet but the only vets around here don't know much about gliders i found one that is willing to learn but she told me up front that she wouldnt' know how to check if he was ok she has never seen glider before.
I really do think that he is 7-8 wks oop i was there when she took him out of the cage with his partents. The dad was very big so i just though he was like his dad till i saw bubba eyes, there were so small.

I would probably make a triple post if I were up at 2:30 am raspberry
Maybe everything is all right, but it really worries me that his eyes are so small and he is so big. I do wish there was another vet so you could have him checked.
Were you able to tell if the mom and dad's eyes were normal looking.
Is there anyway to e-mail a picture? Do you have digital camera or scanner? This is really bugging me.

I agree Karen, the thing that struck me right away was the eyes, they should be bug eyed big round and sticking out. The only glider I have ever seen whose eyes didn't look like that was Godae when he was severly dehydrated and ill with something. he lost that big shape to his eyes. That in itself is reason for concern. As for him being bigger, well if he was one out of a single birth, yes he would be , he didn't have to share his food with another, he could stay in the pouch longer. I am curious as to his diet as well though. Sissy, one thing you have done and not followed up on.. is .. IF something don't feel right, it probably isn't. Take him to the vet. Even if she doesn't knw much she could give him a physical checkup. weight, fecals, dehydration test, heat check etc.. if nothing is wrong at least you know you followed though. Just about everyone here can tell you a story or two about someone that didn't that should have, and others when the smallest thing that wouldn't concern most, saved their gliders life. PLEASE follow your heart, get him checked.

Thanks all of your replys, His parents were brown and he is grey he dad was the biggest glider i have ever seen, not fat but just big. The mom on the other hand looked like she been though alot, one ear and half her tail were missing. But the breeder said they were one of her first pair. He is doing good just very fussy like he is mad at the world he is stressing out my other glider she isn't acting the same, running like crazy around her cage jumping around, i have never seen her act this way, she bit me for the frst time i was in stock, I haven't let them play yet, they have seen each other, i was thinking to give it time and let them get use to each other smell's.
I did call the vet and she said she would like to see him but she doesn't know what a health gilder looks likes, that she still needs time to learn more.
I have a scarner but no film to take a pic of him yet, i will asap and post it so everyone can tell me what they think of my bubba. smile
One other thing he smells like urine, not bad but i can smell it i wash him with a q tip when he does his stuff, but the smell is comeing from his hair, his back and head, i have tubed him down with a warm wash cloth severl time trying to get the smell off but it doesn't do any good. Does any one know what to do about the smell. Is it just the male glider smell like the men's rest room. lol sorry for any guys but they do smell raspberry. Thanks for everything and will keep everyone posted. Something elsa could he be inbred ???

I have a mature male and he doesn't smell bad at all...a tab musky...but its just the things he marks that smells bad...bad smell is usually from bad diet or from other gliders marking them. It could be that he is really marking his new cage over and over and has rubbed himself in his own sticky smelling scent stuff. Or it could be from diet...sicne you just got him it would be from previoys diet...and you don't know what that was...so it will be hard to say if thats it.

Thanks Mary,

I forgot about the diet, that could casue it. It's just weird i don't smell it on her stuff just him at first i though it was his scent glan but it smell like old urine. I am feeding them the same just a little less to him than to her. B mofied mix, frozen vegs, meal worms, baby food, and baby apple juice. He is just getting the baby food apple juice, and the B's mix.
Thanks
Sissy

You just got him so if he was on a bad diet before then it could take a while to change...if it smells like old urine..is he maybe peeing in his pouch and sleeping in it?

if you are really hesitant about this glider i would ask breeder to take him back andget anotheris eyes may not be out as much because of the increased weight for one thing...his little face is fat...i wonder maybe he has a kidney problem...just a thought...what vet does your breeder take them to:? Find out and take him to the same vet..
