I have delt with this 2 times with rescues and can tell you that it is most likely diet related, but HLP is a very general discription and needs to be looked into and treated right away! A glider can die with this very fast. This glider most likely needs calcium given by shot right away. What are you feeding your gliders?

Hmm...could this be an injury rather than HLP, 8 weeks is so young to have it. but I am certainly no expert, maybe one of the veterans can field this one.

You are right, 8 weeks oop sounds too young to have HLP. Did the vet do x-rays to determine that this was a calcium problem?

i had one, for a day, and then the next day she had HLP, took her to the vet, then the day after, she died. the vet did a necropsy on her, and said her diet was fine, but haven't got all the results back, they (vet) wanted to also see if it was a spinal cord injury, so right now they are doing the work on that......... and i'm very sorry about yours, i hope everything comes out ok

Yes there could be other injuries but I also have to ask, if the mother is defficient could that not cause the baby to become defficient as well?
That could make it diet related.

the vet neeeds to do a series of tests, obviously injury would be top on my list as well, but what katara said may also be true, depending on the diet of mom, this joey very well could have a calcium defiency, however, i would think if the levels were that low, that would mean mom would be almost at a nil and would eat the babies. a defect with the ligaments, or even white muscle disease. lack of proteins.. so many possibilities.
Xrays definitly would be in order to even aye or nay on the calcium problem, but also it would rule out any injuries as well.
What is the history of that glider? it's parents? was the little one put in with an older one? etc...

WE HAVE HAD GLIDERS FOR AWHILE. THERE ARE TWO JOEYS AND LIL BIT IS THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS IT. HE HAS HLP BUT SEEMS TO BE COMING OUT OF IT. MOTHER SEEMS FINE, SHE HAS REPTOCAL AND CHAPPARAL VITAMINS ON PLENTY OF FRUITS AND VEGGIES. THE LITTLE ONE WAS DRAGGING BOTH HIND LEGS BUT IS NOW USING THEM LIGHTLY. WE GOT HIM CALCIUM ASAP AND PUT HIM IN A SMALLER ENCLOSER AND HAVE BEEN WATCHING HIM ADAMANTLY. HE HAS HAD THIS FOR ABOUT WEEK AND A HALF. HIS EYES ARE BRIGHT AND HE HAS A GREAT APPETITE. HE WANTS TO BE MORE ACTIVE THAN WE WILL LET HIM. HE PASSES FECES WITH NO PROBLEM AND EVERY THING LOOKS GOOD, BUT I AM TRYING TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE LONG TERM EFFECTS AND HIS CHANCES OF LIVING A SEMI NORMAL LIFE. THE VETS AROUND HERE ARE COUNTRY VETS WHO KNOW ABOUT COWS HORSES AND DOGS. I KNOW MORE ABOUT GLIDERS THAN THEY DO AND THAT IS SCARY BECAUSE I DONT KNOW MUCH. ANYWAY THANKS FOR ALL INFO. AND ANY TO COME

If you think his problem is due to a lack of calcium in his diet then wouldnt it make sence to research that and make the nessisary changes? I would suggest putting them on Bourbons leadbeaters mix ASAP. The supplements you have them on are not good, they dont have the right calcium to phosphorus ratios and will through you diet balance way out of wack.

there is no protein in the diet. as katara said the ca:ph ratio is way off. fruits and veggies, is not a diet for a healthy glider

Also you need to switch to Recal instead of Reptocal. Reptocal has phosphorus and Recal is phosphorus free. Definetly recommend Bourbons Leadbeaters, it's the best diet offered out there so far.

Please do look at your diet! Where do your gliders get protien?? They need 33% and you are giving none. This will defifnitly cayse them to be weak and less active. If the calcium helped the HLP then well its obvious you should get a better diet. Once on a better diet the glider can become completly healed and live a perfectly normal life.

I highly suggest bourbons modified leadbeaters diet plan its found here:
