Seeds aren't good for gliders, they can cause digestive problems.

I do feed my gliders a combination of seeds, grains, dehydrated fruits and veggies (2 T per week), plus fresh fruits, veggies, Leadbeaters, crickets and mealworms. They do get seeds off of plants in the wild, but you have to make sure you don't feed them too many. They prefer them over anything else and they can fill up on them and not eat the other fresh foods.

Gliders in the wild will eat seeds, but from fruit - THERE IS NO BIRDSEED IN THE WILD - at least not what you are talking about. Domestic birdseed is not good for sugar gliders. As Maria stated, it is can cause severe digestive problems and worse digestive blockages. This is caused from the seed (birdseed) not being digested and passed through the intestine as it should be. I do not, have not and will not feed my sugar gliders birdseed Just some "food" for thought ;)

If you know about bird digestion and glider digestion then you realize they are totally different. Birds can store things like birdseeds while gliders do not have a storage area. Gliders can not properly digest the birdseed.

Where do you think bird seed comes from? It is not man-made in a factory some where. Almost every plant with pollen has a seed. Do you think in the wild they will say, "I'll just drink the nectar, but I cannot digest these seeds so I'm not going to eat them"? I am talking about a combination of deydrated fruit(apricots, orange, raisins), veggies(zuchinni, corn), sunflower seeds (maybe 10 in a whole 2 pound bag), pistachio nuts, and a few grains. There primary source of food in the wild is nectar, seeds, insects and rodents or small animals. I think this is a matter of opinion and my gliders are very healthy. The seed mixture is also good for cleaning teeth. The mix is one I make up myself and they prefer it over everything. That is why they only get two teaspoons per week.

My vet very specifily told me that gliders digestion is very different from that of birds. He had a glider die and they did a necropsy...the glider had pieces of bird seed blocking the passage way of food. I was told to never feed birdseed. Sunflower seeds and larger seeds are not the same...birdseed is very small and hard and gets stuck in the glider.
