Hi,

Im getting my baby female sugar glider in about a week. I will have all the things I need to care for her. Since most of you have one or two, I would like any advice or tips that you may have. Things that you wish you would have known when you got yours. I know that she will need a friend and I plan on getting her one as soon as I bond with her. Thanks.

The biggest thing I wish I ahd done is this.

Find a good glider vet close by!! There are very few vets that wills ee gliders..and most of them don't know what they are talkign about. Glider emergencys happen very fast and usually very late at night. Find a glider vet close by that really knows what they are talking about..and take your new glider there for a healthy check up as soon as you get them.

Sorry if this is messing things up, but I am illiterate with the computer and the internet. My life would not be the same without my sugar gliders...my pride and joy. I have had my original sugar gliders - BeBop and GG (Grouchy Girl) for nearly 5 years now. They are currently the great grandparents of Jenna Joy, her younger brother Little Joe, and her yougest sisters - Jennifer Joy and Josie Joy. GG's first born was my all time favorite, Jessica Joy who I still miss with every ounce of my being....
A couple of years ago I noticed a large abdominal mass. (I knew it was not cancer because it would get bigger then smaller and vice versa. I also knew it was not an infection because JJ ate well, ran/flew around like a bat out of hell (wasn't lethargic). I did take her to the vet for exploratory surgery: She had a hernia, and because of the small size of sugar glider, there's not much to attach things to. At any rate, JJ woke up before the vet was thru and started to pull out stitches, so he had to put her under again. She didn't survive the 2nd dose of anesthesia. (She did come home with me, surviving about a day and a half; but she never totally woke up. She was and always will be the best ever sugar glider.
JJ's mate was Pudy Tat the fat cat, and their firstborn was Jamie Joy whose mate is Joey (Papa Joe). JJ was out of GG's pouch 2/97; 11/97 JJ had Jamie Joy who did not have Jenna until late last year. (She was my first mama to have twins the first time.) Yes, I know I am rambling....My point is that well cared for sugar gliders should rarely need a vet if they are well-fed and get an adequate supply of calcium...which is very critical. I always gave my gliders yogurt or yogurt drops, and I never had a glider with hind leg paralysis. (Years ago people tried to tell me they couldn't digest the lactose; but I was happy to see a recent article by C. MacPherson backing me up.)
My WORDS OF WISDOM: do NOT believe everything you hear: Check it out first!! I heard a USDA breeder in a pet store say she was getting rid of hers because they smell. If you are keeping you cage clean and your animal is giving off and odor, it is because it is unhappy about something. Case in point: Julie called to say she thought Gizmo had reached sexual maturity because he was smelling. I asked her where the cage was - in a drafty place? - no; but it was in a place whe occasionally bumped into it. She moved him: The smell left. Also, when I bring a new glider in, the ones in the neighboring cages give off odors until everybody settles back down. With my baby gliders, I try to get the to accept the scent of other gliders, but there are times even I cannot get the job done. Some of my gliders (even tho they are tame) will bite if I have the scent of another glider on my hands - so I always wash my hands when handling gliders in different cages. Yes, I know I am long winded, but what I do have to say is IMPORTANT!

Sugar gliders love their treats, but do not overdo it. I buy the following in small quantities from a grocery store where they have bulk bins. (This keeps things such as nuts fresh, not stale and rancid.) My little loves have favorites: pine nuts, RAW sunflower seeds IN THE SHELL, SMALL amounts of cheese and cream cheese. NEVER FEED THEM LARGE AMOUNTS OF FATTY THINGS LIKE cheese, peanuts (or any other kind of nut) - no more than one a day, or you can kill them literally overnight. In the summertime, I save watermelon seeds because the gliders like the meat from them. DIET: 70% Fresh fruit (not canned) or some veggies (mine love sweet corn and raw sweet potatoes), 30% protein - mealworms, crickets, plain microwaved chicken, turkey; boiled egg - including the shell, especially with pregnant mamas. I also leave "monkey biscuit for them. In conclusion, the world is a much better place with sugar gliders in it.

This is a forum for discussion. Placements of messages wanting sugar gliders or selling sugar gliders will be deleted. Linda, I'm sorry you had trouble e-mailing me. (I'm not very literate with the internet or computers, but hopefully I make up for it with my animal knowledge.) I have posted responses to some other questions, but feel free to try to reach me via this chat line. I also have a mailbox at blooprints@hotmail.com. Although it is going to take me sometime I will be getting up a webpage. First things first though: I haven't a domain name yet. My page will have sugar glider postcards and info available. I have been asked to put together a book of sugar glider stories, so if you have any do keep me posted. At my sight I'll also have helpful hints about cooking, gardening, shopping, etc. I am hoping to have fun with it. I'll let you know when I get up and running. s

Linda, what part of the country are you in? (Just curious) You can contact me here if you have any other questions I can help you with. Let me know you mailing address and I'll send you one of my postcards. It features Jamie Joy; she's the only one who'll stay still long enough for me to snap a picture.

Congrats!! I know you'll love your little one. Keep her in a pouch with you everyday till she gets used to you. During the day she'll be content to sleep - while getting used to your scent...I confess I bought a few gliders that I handled daily for 3 entire months and they never settled down; I consider them breeders, not pets...My "pets" are the babies I "raised" and handled every day since OOP. They are extraordinarily tame and have never had problems bonding with their new owners. They don't leave or run away either, except to visit and explore new territory/people; but they always glide back to me.....I'll expect you to post your experiences. You can chat when petting your new baby. (Treats always endear them to you...I don't know of a sugar glider that doesn't LOVE mealworms.) GOOD LUCK! I'll expect some glider gossip when I get home from work tonight - midnight you time.
