I am a little confused about the diets required for sugargliders. First I am told to feed dry cat food but it has to be the best kind and along with some fruits and must give a supplement every other day. Now I am being told I should not feed my glider dry cat food at all. I am familar with Ledbetter's diet. Haven't tried it. But the book on that diet say the rodents are not the best to buy in the pet store. Please define rodents. Are they mice, roaches, crickets? I need all the info I can get. Thanks!

OK...You have a lot of questions. First off, cat food is made for cats, you wouldn't feed a dog cat food would you? Cat food is not good for gliders, it is not made with their needs in mind.
Some people feed their gliders mice but most do not. Good insects to feed are crickets and mealworms. My gliders get crickets every night and mealworms a couple of times a week. I use Bourbon's Modified Leadbeaters. I also feed fresh fruits and veges.

Here is a good link to go to about diets:

Please read the link posted above. There amy not be a BEST glider diet..but cat food is deffinitly not for cats! The diet needs to be balanced for gliders needs and it needs to be complete and proven.

Most people here use Bourbons leadbeaters diet..I personally think its the bets, and thats what I use.

This is a forum for discussion. Placements of messages wanting sugar gliders or selling sugar gliders will be deleted. Please get Caroline MacPherson's book - SUGARGLIDERS. Diet should be 75% FRESH FRUIT/veggies (mine live raw sweet potato and corn best, but they'll sometimes eat romaine lettuce. Favorite glider food would be blueberries, grapes, apples, oranges, papaya. (Mine don't like strawberries or bananas.) Sometimes your gliders will be miffed at what you feed them, but I always leave mine "monkey biscuit" and they'll always eat it. It is critical that your glider get adequate CALCIUM in its diet. I give mine yogurt (they also get to lick the cup clean) or ygurt drops for small animals (should be readily found in your local pet store). PLEASE BE CAREFUL NOT TO GIVE YOUR GLIDER TOO MUCH OF A TREAT, no matter how much it begs. It can kill the animal. Case in point: Do not give a glider more than ONE RAW PEANUT/day. One grandpa came along and washed off two cashews and gave it to GIGI; this wonderful year old animal died the next day. (It wasn't the salt grandpa thought was was harmful that did Gigi in. First the cashews were roasted - not raw; secondly they were probably roasted in oil; thirdly, two cashews is probably the equivalent of 4 peanuts.

This is a forum for discussion. Placements of messages wanting sugar gliders or selling sugar gliders will be deleted. PS: Please do not let anyone tell you that a sugar glider is a rodent: SUGAR GLIDERS ARE NOT RODENTS; THEY ARE MARSUPIALS. Please get the book I previously mentioned and keep it as a reference. As the previously posted answers go, I agree. I do feed my animals mealworms, crickets, boiled egg (shell included - especially with pregnant females, microwaved chicken or turkey - no fat, skin or seasoning. REMINDER: CALCIUM IS CRITICAL TO YOUR GLIDERS DIET: IT WILL SUFFER FROM HIND LEG PARALYSIS IF THERE IS INSUFFICIENT CALCIUM. Enjoy your sugar gliders. Mine are more precious than gold to me, and I love them to pieces - hence the names of my PRIDE AND JOY: My most recent additions are the great granddaughters of my original pair BeBop and GG (Grouchy Girl) - purchased from a USDA breeder; they were wild caughts from Indonesia. Josie Joy and Jennifer Joy have an older brother Little Joe and an even older sister Jenna Joy. Their parents are (Papa) Joe - who I bought from the USDA breeder I got GG and BeBop from and Jamie Joy, the firstborn of Jessica Joy (firstborn of GG and BeBop) and Pudy Tat the fat cat. Jenna Joy is currently with Adam, the firstborn of Lena Lena Grumpalena and Rudy Toot Toot. (I do have more gliders, but these are my favorites.)

As for your glider that died..did they do a necropsy? Peanuts contain a toxin called alotoxin. It has killed test animals. And I do know of one glider mthat died from eating one peanut..the necropsy showed alfotoxin in the liver. I would not feed gliders any peanuits ever because this toxin can kill them.
