Hi Jesse,
I have a few questions for you. First, how long do Sugar Gliders get ? Is it hard to take care of them? Do they stink if so how do you get rid of the smell? Do they bite? If they bite is there a way to tame them?
To Jesse

This is a forum for discussion. Placements of messages wanting sugar gliders or selling sugar gliders will be deleted. Every sugar glider owner should have Caroline MacPherson's book SUGARGLIDERS; it is published by Barron's and can be purchased at any major bookstore. Please be careful of some of the infomation you'll find on the internet: Some of it is very good, some very bad. With the help of the book I recommended, you should be able to weed out or discern the most accurate information. I just got online a few nights ago and admit to being computer/internet illiterate, but I'll try to be available for you here. (Eventually, I'll have my own page up - offering sugar glider postcards. I developed them because none were available and I like to use them. If you want to know why I feel qualified to answer glider questions, please take note. I have successfully raised them for nearly 5 years now. I still have my original wild caught pair from Indonesia - BeBop and GG (Grouchy Girl) and many of their progeny - most recently Josie Joy and Jennifer Joy, their older brother (Little) Joe, an even older sister Jenna Joy. Parents are Joey (Papa Joe) and Jamie Joy, firstborn of JJ (Jessica Joy, my pride and JOY) and Pudy Tat the fat cat. JJ was the firstborn of BeBop and GG. My background is in biology and psychology, specifically learning theory; so I may be able to help with behavioral problems of your gliders. Never hesitate to ask if you have questions....BUT, be careful; it is possible to get MISINFORMED on the internet too. Good luck!

If the cage is clean and the odor is musky, your sugar glider is VERY UNHAPPY about something. (Please check out other postings on this topping: I have already had my say on the topic.)

Sugar gliders should NOT bite unless you scare or upset them. Sudden movement will scare a glider and even the most tame sugar glider WILL BITE if it is SCARED. Waking a glider up suddenly will sometimes scare it. My Jamie Joy was sound asleep inside my shirt one day when she woke up "screaming" and crabbing and biting. Also, take note: When a sugar glider BARKS, it will do so loud enough to wake you, and it means that it wants something. My GG used to get out of the cage if there was the slightest extra space to squeeze out of. She'd then HIDE - never in the same place twice. Whenever she'd get hungry though, she'd go back to the cage. If I was not awake, she would BARK (and trust me, it would wake the dead).

I would like to tag something on here about biting. Sometimes a glider will bite due to a smell they don't like. I had this problem with one of my gliders, Equal, and talked with Bourbon about it. She discovered that the reason Equal was biting was because of a scent on my wrist or hands and he loathed the smell and not necessarily that I was scaring him or upseting him.

Jill, I'm curious, what was the scent? Was it perfume or soap or something else? It would be interesting to know if all sugar gliders dislike certain smells, or if each sugar glider has his/her own preference of smells that he/she dislikes.

My gliders HATE Oil Of Olay Body Wash. I put them on me and they literally jump off of me the second they smell it. I was always curious about scents b/c my gliders never seemed to cared. UNTIL I made the mistake of buying a very good smelling boady wash raspberry.

Well Eric I am still trying to figure that out. Since it is only one glider and my oldest one at that Bourbon kind of thought that it might be the scent of the younger one on me first. So I am still in the experimental stage. I agree with her since it is only one that has a problem and usually I have held the younger one first. But I will see, I am trying different soaps and stuff too.
